Commemorating the First Shot of World War 1

Many will know that the first shot fired anywhere in the British Empire in World War 1 was from the coastal battery at Point Nepean. You may not know that 2/10 Light Battery fired a commemorating one-gun salute on the 100th anniversary of that shot.

MAJ Garry Rolfe, then Officer Commanding the 2nd/10th Light Battery, 5th/6th Battalion RVR, wrote an article from The Australian Reservist that talks about the first shot and the commemoration – https://artilleryvic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Point-Nepean-First-Shot-article.pdf

If you have not recently been to the Point Nepean National Park, it is well worth a day trip. The gun emplacements and tunnels are well maintained and annotated. You can also explore the Quarantine Station (and old Officer Cadet School, or OCS).
